Exclusive Interview: Love/Hate’s Janet On Controversial Finale
GimmeShowbiz spent the morning hanging out with Love/Hate’s latest big star, actress Mary Murray, who plays Nidge’s love interest/brothel manager “Janet”. She invited us into her home for a cuppa and a long chat about the public’s reaction to the season finale, stripping off on-camera and what’s on the cards for Season 5.
Mary plays Nidge’s bit-on-the-side who is now having doubts about getting involved with the crime lord – he’s shown his true colours and she has realized it may not be the wisest move to end up in a relationship with Nidge.
She spoke about that sex scene insisting how she didn’t actually get her kit off. All you saw were those faces she pulled – she revealed the sex scene was 3 and a half pages long in the script!!
Some viewers were disappointed with the season finale but Mary told GimmeShowbiz she loved the ending. She said “I personally loved the end because we know there’s a season 5 and I’, wondering where do the characters go from here. There was so much hype with people wondering who would be killed off next – would it be Fran or Nidge but after killing off Darren in the last series, there’s no way they’d be forgiven for that. Stuart Carolan is leading people down different tracks all the time and there’s no predictability for anyone. It’s brilliant to get that kind of reaction though – I think they’re more upset because it’s the end of the season. I guarantee those people will watch next season”.
We’re hearing the show will be made in America so what does Mary think about that? She said “It’s great – great for Irish actors. I just wonder how they’re gonna do it. What’s the plan – are they sticking to the format in terms of there’s a kingpin and the mistress and the wife and assassin. What makes they want to buy an Irish show?”. She also thinks Colin Farrell would be great in an American version of the show (he recently told GimmeShowbiz he hadn’t seen the show yet but was planning on getting the box set for Christmas as he’s heard great things about it).
So what will happen next to Nidge? Mary thinks he’s doing some “intimidating by getting himself locked up. There are also drugs on the way and Nidge can’t be done for it if he is locked up. He’s safe inside”.
Mary’s real-life brothers were cast as Lizzie’s brothers who were murdered in the previous series. Mary says at the time, she thought she’d be perfect for the role considering they are her real brothers but thinks Caoilfhionn Dunne did a magnificent job and then the role of Janet came up. So was she offended when they cast her as a brothel manager? Mary said “Not at all — give me any role and I’ll do it. I wasn’t offended – if you say you want me to play an ugly, disgusting person, I’d be happy. Just give me the part”.
When asked if Nidge will leave his wife for Janet, actress Mary told GimmeShowbiz there are a lot of details that need to be filled hopefully in Season 5. Although she couldn’t confirm if she’ll be back, she hopes writer Stuart Carolan will develop her character further.
Mary Murray can be seen in A One Woman Comedy called “No Smoke Without Fire” at the Viking Theatre@ The Sheds in Clontarf from December 9th-21st. She explains the plot – “there’s €60,000 post office robbery up for grabs while six women gossip intermittently in the smoking area of a Dublin pub leaking a trail of personal information behind them”.
